Alternative News Online – 10 suggestions & a question

with one comment

WOW!!!! Sexy title, huh?

Here’s a list of recommended online news sources I recently put together for a zine. IMHO, it’s worthwhile, but certainly not comprehensive. Check some of these out for yourself and see what you think. The question is – what are your preferred corners of the web for alternative/progressive/radical/actual news, commentary and analysis? Please bomb the comments with your own suggestions.

Australia-based

Overland Magazine is a quarterly in its 53rd year of publication, and more easily accessed at www.overlandexpress.org. The motto is ‘temper democratic, bias Australian’ and it offers a truly striking array of articles – investigative activism, cultural works, fiction, reviews, analysis and opinion. Contributors have ranged from Manning Clark, Germaine Greer, and Bob Ellis to Anonymous. Highly Recommended Time Absorber.

The Monthly and Quarterly Essay can be checked out at www.themonthly.com.au. It would seem that Melbourne-based publisher Black Inc. Books, are keen to both fill the void left by media choosing to neither deeply interrogate the actions and nor truer meanings of Australian politics, cultural practices, and history. Worth Being Provoked By..

National Indigenous Times – whether online at www.nit.com.au or as a fortnightly newspaper, NIT regularly breaks big stories on indigenous and governmental matters in Oz. The AFP raided their editor trying to find leaked Cabinet documents, so they must be doing something right. Much Respect.

www.NewMatilda.com is a weekly which both plays and dances to ‘a different tune’. Their polls are saucy, the writing sharp, and the web-links always deliver both surprising and multi-voiced background to issues. Socially conscious but non-partisan, writers with opposing viewpoints on emerging environmental, political, and media issues are often run in tandem – a sign of respect for the reader. Leading Edge & Interactive.

www.tasmaniantimes.com is a daily which presents itself as “a cheeky, irreverent challenge to the mass media’s obsession with popularity, superficiality and celebrity.”. More importantly, Tasmanistanian Premier Paul Lennon has described it as “f—in’ useless”. Frequently forest-focused, but also great for a different perspective on mainland news and politics, with a refreshing mix of voices and attitudes. Sassy & Informative.

GLOBAL

www.counterpunch.org Counter Punch humbly calls itself ‘America’s best political newsletter’. Truth is, it’s far better than that. About a dozen fresh insights daily. Recent contributors include Noam Chomsky, Fidel Castro, and hip hop wunderkind Saul Williams. With articles like ‘Bono’s Bullshit: not one red cent’ and ‘the Generation of IEDs and iPods’ you’ll want to spend time here, either doing your own weekly scroll or daily for the more US-intrigued. An Essential Visit.

Z Mag at http://zmagsite.zmag.org really tears it up from all over the globe. Fantastic portal to global writings on gay rights, activism, culture, arts, environment, foreign and domestic news and politics. Also links directly through ZNet at www.zmag.org to videos, great writers’ blogs, audio and debates. Hard To Out-Do.

www.greenmaven.com Why scour the web for the latest green facts that governments tell you too late? Green Maven harvests the cutting edge green news and cutting out the crap that makes you want to nuke the planet. Exceptionally Handy.

http://english.aljazeera.net In my opinion, Al Jazeera has lost some edginess since it started catering to a western audience, but it’s still one of the best places to get real news first. With the Middle East a guaranteed focus of world news for years to come, definitely good to read. Compare the news here with what most other sources say is happening – someone’s bullshitting! Mucho Necessito.

www.harpers.org Harpers is flat out great. Nice to know that some Americans not only have an interest in reality, but really, really hate what America is doing to the world as well. Great coverage, good insight and analysis, thorough investigations. Nicely Inquisitive.
