Breaking News from Tasmania – Gunns Don’t Kill Democracy, Governments Do (it for them)

If you have been following the debacle around the World’s Most Shambolically Assessed Pulp Mill and the ongoing efforts of all relevant bureaucrats to act convinvingly as thought there is nothing more normal in the world than major corruption of process, health, environment, and the spirit – let alone the letter – of environmental and planning law, check out this brand new latest piece from Sue Neales at the Hobart Mercury.

Turns out that the Lennon government slipped in an additional 1100 pages of approvals and permit conditions at the last minute. Gunns have had a chance to look them over and comment, as well as recommend changes. Elected representatives – wait for it – haven’t yet had that chance. In fact, rather than changing anything, they’re meant to just vote “Yes JohnPaul” without having read the material.

As if that isn’t enough, check out Steve Kons, Tasmanian Deputy Premier, as he responds to a respected and moderate business professional making a perfectly valid observation on what a farce the whole Tasmanian process has become, and even what a disaster this mill will surely be. Steve Kons – you, sir, are a dick.
